Project 100 = 50 offers low-to-middle income families an opportunity to purchase daily necessities at subsidised rates for the next year. The project was launched on 24 August at the Arena @ Our Tampines Hub by our MPs for Tampines GRC, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Mr Desmond Choo, Mr Baey Yam Keng, and Ms Cheng Li Hui.

The subsidies apply to 330 different grocery items, including canned food, frozen food, rice, oil, laundry supplies and personal care items. The discounts are capped at 50 per cent of the total bill, or $50 – whichever is lower. Five hundred families received assistance from the project, which was organised by Sheng Shiong Supermarket and Heartwarmers Volunteer Group.

“We want to help low- to middle- income residents cope with the cost of living. Residents can get things that they need at below the usual supermarket prices. This will allow them to save on cost, as well as reduce wastage,” Mr Choo explained.

“This is a good opportunity to choose what they want, instead of what we think they want,” said Steve Foo, 52, founder of Heartwarmers Volunteer Group.

Kamariah, 59, said: “My sister is living alone. Her legs are not so good, so she cannot work. This programme can help her save significantly.”

Elaine, 19, a volunteer stationed at the cash counter, said: “It’s quite fulfilling because I get to experience what it is like to work, and the beneficiaries get to purchase stuff at a discounted price.”
